VATSIM North America and VATSIM Oceania are proud to announce VATSIM's Pacific Oceanic Partnership.

VATSIM's Pacific Oceanic Partnership is a revolutionary change in the way Oceanic airspace is operated in the online world.

Prior to its establishment, Oceanic airspace within the Pacific was controlled by multiple separate divisions who each set their own operating, testing and certification procedures for controllers and pilots. To staff an Oceanic ATC position you had to have been certified by the division responsible for that particular piece of airspace.

Now, the Pacific Oceanic Partnership Programme has brought together the Oceanic operations of VATNZ, VATPAC, and VATUSA with a standard set of procedures, and a standard training and testing syllabus.

Full details at the VATSIM Pacific Oceanic Partnership Website: http://pacificoceanic.vatsim.net

We're very excited to be able to announce the Pacific Oceanic Partnership. VATNZ is one of the founding divisions of this new project, along with VATPAC and VATUSA. Together we're responsible for almost all of the Oceanic airspace in the Pacific and the Eastern Indian Oceans.

There is more detailed information available at the Pacific Oceanic Partnership website - http://pacificoceanic.vatsim.net - but in brief what this means for VATNZ members is:

  • all members of VATNZ, VATPAC, and VATUSA will be trained to the same Oceanic procedures and standards. You will still do your training within your home division, however the training syllabus itself has been unified between the partner divisions so it will cover the same procedures as elsewhere.

  • receipt of their Oceanic Controller rating will permit members of any of the three divisions to staff any Oceanic position covered by the programme, regardless of which division the position belongs to. In other words, an Oceanic Controller Rating from VATNZ would let you control Oakland Radio in the VATUSA division, as well as any oceanic position in VATNZ or VATPAC airspace. (Note: currently, VATUSA's Atlantic oceanic positions are not covered by the agreement, see the map on the partnership website for a list of the effected FIRs)

If you have any questions about the new programme and how it affects VATNZ, please feel free to contact me via email, PM, or by post elsewhere in the forums.

Just to clarify exactly what airspace is covered by this programme:

  • All VATNZ Oceanic FIRs
  • All VATPAC Oceanic FIRs
  • VATUSA's Oakland Oceanic FIR

Note, VATUSA's other Oceanic Divisions and those of any other division are not currently part of the programme, and still require a Visiting Controller endorsement in order to control there.
