Kaikoura Sector

Section 1: General

1.1 Area of Responsibility

NZCH-K_CTR (Kaikoura Sector) is responsible for all controlled airspace within their designated area of responsibility (see diagram), excluding Christchurch Terminal and Nelson Towers when those units are online.

Controls up to FL600. Controls area above NZCH_APP from FL255 to FL600.

Note: NZCH-K is responsible for Christchurch Terminal Airspace when they are not online

1.3 Star Clearances outside Sector:

Kaikoura is responsible for issuing the appropriate STAR for NZWB, NZWN and NZCH.

Section 2: Taranaki Sector Procedures

2.1 Area of Responsibility

Taranaki is responsible for controlled airspace within their area of responsible as depicted in Part 1, Section 1.1, of the Taranaki Sector SOP.

2.2 Transfer of Control Points:

Unless otherwise coordinated, the transfer of control point shall be at the common airspace boundary.

2.3 Transfer of Communications:

Unless otherwise coordinated, the transfer of communications shall occur prior to the common airspace boundary.

Section 3: Ohakea Sector Procedures

3.1 Area of Responsibility

Taranaki is responsible for controlled airspace within their area of responsible as depicted in Part 1, Section 1.1, of the Ohakea Sector SOP.

3.2 Transfer of Control Points:

Unless otherwise coordinated, the transfer of control point shall be at the common airspace boundary.

3.3 Transfer of Communications:

Unless otherwise coordinated, the transfer of communications shall occur prior to the common airspace boundary.

Section 4: South Sector Procedures

4.1 Area of Responsibility

Taranaki is responsible for controlled airspace within their area of responsible as depicted in Part 1, Section 1.1, of the Ohakea Sector SOP.

4.2 Transfer of Control Points:

Unless otherwise coordinated, the transfer of control point shall be at the common airspace boundary.

4.3 Transfer of Communications:

Unless otherwise coordinated, the transfer of communications shall occur prior to the common airspace boundary.

Section 5: Wellington Terminal Procedures

5.1 Area of Responsibility:

Wellington Terminal is responsible for controlled airspace within their area of responsibility as depicted in Part 1, Section 1.1 of the Wellington Terminal SOP.

5.2 Arrival Sequencing:

Kaikoura shall ensure that aircraft on the same STAR/routing, landing NZWN or NZWB, are sequenced such that they are 10 miles in trail of each other unless otherwise coordinated.

5.3 Standard Descents:

Unless otherwise coordinated, Kaikoura shall descend aircraft to the following levels:

Landing NZWN/NZWB/NZPP:  11,000ft or lower cruise

5.4 Transfer of Control Points:

Unless otherwise coordinated, the transfer of control point shall occur prior to the common airspace boundary.

5.5 Transfer of Communications:

Unless otherwise coordinated, the transfer of communications shall occur prior to the common airspace boundary.

5.6 Oceanic Flights:

Wellington Terminal may handoff Oceanic departures to Kaikoura prior to the common airspace boundary, allowing Kaikoura to climb oceanic aircraft above FL250 prior to the common boundary.

Section 6: Christchurch Terminal Procedures

6.1 Area of Responsibility:

Christchurch Terminal is responsible for controlled airspace within their area of responsibility as depicted in Part 1, Section 1.1 of the ChristchurchTerminal SOP.

6.2 Arrival Sequencing and STAR's:

Kaikoura is responsible for issuing the appropriate STAR for aircraft inbound to NZCH from NZWN and NZWB

Kaikoura shall ensure that aircraft on the same or adjacent STARs, landing NZCH, are sequenced such that they are 10 miles in trail of each other, unless otherwise coordinated.

An example of adjacent STARs is the PEAKS and IGEGA STARs.

6.3 Standard Descents:

Unless otherwise coordinated, Kaikoura shall descend aircraft to the following levels:

Landing NZCH:  11,000ft or lower cruise

6.4 Transfer of Control Points:

Unless otherwise coordinated, the transfer of contorl point shall occur prior to the common airspace boundary.

5.5 Transfer of Communications:

Unless otherwise coordinated, the transfer of communications shall occur prior to the common airspace boundary.

5.6 Oceanic Flights:

Christchurch Terminal may handoff Oceanic departures to Kaikoura prior to the common airspace boundary, allowing Kaikoura to climb oceanic aircraft above FL250 prior to the common boundary.

Section 7: Nelson Tower Procedures

7.1 Area of Responsibility:

Nelson Tower is responsible for all flights within the NS CTA/D and CTR/D as well as the CH CTA/C, 12,000ft or below, within the lateral boundaries of the CTA/D.

7.2 Standard Descents:

Unless otherwise coordinated, Kaikoura shall descend aircraft to:

Landing NZNS: 11,000ft or lower cruise.

7.3 Transfer of Control Points

Arriving aircraft: NULKO, NOVTU, SIMZI, UDERA; or 40 NS DME, unless otherwise coordinated.
Departing aircraft:  15 NS DME, unless otherwise coordinated

7.4 Transfer of Communications:

Arriving aircraft: NULKO, NOVTU, SIMZI, UDERA; or 40 NS DME, unless otherwise coordinated.
Departing aircraft:  15 NS DME, unless otherwise coordinated

7.5 Unattended Procedures:

When Nelson Tower is offline, Taranaki is responsible for issuing IFR clearances to departing aircraft.
