Lord of the Rings Tour

The Lord of the Rings Trilogy is one of the most prominant aspects of New Zealand tourism. Filmed entirely in New Zealand with most of the editing done by Weta Workshop in Wellington, the trilogy won a total of 17 Academy awards.

This Sunday we embark on a tour up the country visiting the three main locations in the film. Starting in Queenstown (NZQN), head north to Taupo (NZAP) and then onto Matamata (NZMA) or Hamilton (NZHN).

Queenstown was the location for a large amount of filming. It hosted the "attack of the Wargs". The Kawarau River was used as the River Anduin. The Remarkables and Glenorchy were also featured in the film.

Mount Ngaruahoe featured in the trilogy as "Mount Doom". The area also featured as the location of "Mordor". Ski Fields on Mt Ruapehu were the location of a number of small scenes.

Nicknamed "Hobbiton", Matamata is a short drive from Hamilton and was the location for "Hobbiton" in the trilogy. Based on a farm, the filming took place over three months and the site is now a major tourist attraction.
