Our August Fly-in is going to be Gisborne Airport!
Friday Night Fly-Ins are designed to bring the experience of a General Aviation fly-in to VATSIM. While we can't simulate the fun that fly-in's provide once you arrive, we can certainly provide the fun experience of actually flying in.
These events will be moving around airports in NZ and could be Controlled and Un-controlled airports but the flying is primarly focused on VFR flying.
Fly-in time is scheduled for 7:30pm NZ time, (0730 UTC) so plan to arrive at Gisborne around then.
Located in the the Gisborne region, Gisborne (NZGS) is a small regional airport located just west of the main city. Gisborne is runways galore, with a main 1310m long seal 14/32 and 3 grass runways consiting of 750m long grass 14/32, 1173m long 09/72 and 1170m long 03/21. Gisborne is serviced by Air New Zealdn, Sunair and Air Napier. It is also one of the very few airports in the world to have a railway long that crosses the main runway!
Shorter flight options are limited for Gisborne mainly to Napier (NZNR), Wairoa (NZWO) and over the hills from Opotiki (NZOP). Longer options could include flying up from Taupo (NZAP), Rotorua (NZRO) or Dannevirke (NZDV).
After arriving, be sure to stick around to watch and listen to the other traffic coming in and out for the airport for the event, then why not pick a different airport to depart to and enjoy the fantastic scenery the area has to offer.
ATC
ATC for Core positions will be rostered on by the Events Director for Friday Fly-in events.
This decision was made due to the high interest in controlling and limited positions available.
