Operations Director

Responsible to:

  • VATNZ Divsion Director

Direct Reports:

  • VATNZ Airspace Manager
  • Operations Staff

Responsibilties

  • Oversee airspace operations within the VATNZ Division, supporting broader divisional functions as required 
  • Monitor real-world and VATSIM-related changes that may impact VATNZ operations or airspace
  • Develop, publish, and maintain VATNZ aeronautical datasets and applications to support operational outputs, while providing technical and procedural expertise to the Division
  • Develop, publish, and maintain operational procedures for VATNZ airspace, including the issuance of NOTAMs and the development of divisional policy
  • Act as the Division’s primary point of contact for operational matters, including serving as the Division’s Head Facility Engineer
  • Participate in Board-level discussions and planning, including attendance at periodic Board meetings and contribution to division-wide initiatives
  • Contribute to strategic decision-making, policy review, and the long-term planning of VATNZ operations
  • Carry out any other duties as agreed with the Division Director

Position Holder Attributes:

  • Be a member of the VATNZ Division for more than 12 months, and in good standing
  • Ideally hold a current controller rating of C1 (Enroute Controller), though consideration will be given to experienced S3 (TMA Controller) candidates
  • Have a sound knowledge of the VATSIM Code of Conduct and Code of Regulations
  • Demonstrate proven ability in managing a small team
  • Demonstrate proven competence in the use of VATSIM-approved controller client software
  • Possess strong written communication skills, with experience drafting procedures, policy, or documentation
  • Possess a high level of technical literacy, particularly in data management, systems integration, or documentation workflows
  • Ideally be involved in the New Zealand aviation industry, with a strong understanding of current policies and procedures
  • Ideally possess experience interpreting real-world aviation documentation (e.g. AIP, charts, LoAs) for use in a virtual environment
