Non-Normal Night Shift - GPS Outage

Welcome to our first Non-Normal Night shift, the GPS Outage!

Non-Normal Night Shift is our way of changing up your Sunday evenings once a month.

It might be a simple change in route, or it might be something completly out of left field.

For this months Non-Normal, we are simulating a GPS Outage over the whole of New Zealand, with the addition of a route change.

Our routing tonight is going to be Christchurch - Palmterson North.

The theme of this event is that all GPS facilties have become unavailable in New Zealand for some reason, so we all have to revert to VOR/NDB/DME navigation.

ATC will be issuing re-routes as needed to fit into the event routing, and ATC will be issuing ILS, VOR and NDB approaches as the primary approaches, either via overhead joins, DME arcs or, in rare cases, vectors.

Below are guides on how to fly a couple of the approaches to give you an idea of what you need to be doing.

If requested, ATC will approve RNAV routing and RNAV SIDs, STARs and approaches, but we highly encourage you to follow the event and try something different for a change.

Routing

NZCH -> NZPM : CH H221 WN H534 PM
NZPM -> NZCH :  DOGAD V112 WN V306 ATBUB H159 CH

Approach via the Overhead (Proc Turn)

Using the NZPM VOR/DME 07 as the example, located here: http://www.aip.net.nz/pdf/NZPM_43.1_43.2.pdf

  1. Follow your routing to the PM VOR
  2. Enter the hold at the PM VOR for a course reversial
  3. Exit the hold on your first inbound leg, flying the 221 radial for Commerical traffic, 238 radial for GA
  4. Upon reaching 10 DME, make a right turn to track inbound on the 068 radial for the final approach, descending per the Advisory altitude table

Approach via the Overhead (Racetrack)

Using the NZPM VOR/DME 25 as the example, located here: http://www.aip.net.nz/pdf/NZPM_43.1_43.2.pdf

  1. Follow your routing to the PM VOR
  2. Track outbound on the 250 radial
  3. Upon reaching 14 DME, enter the hold at UVUSI for a course reversial.
    1. Do this by making a right hand turn about 30-45 degress from your heading tracking outbout
    2. Once reaching 20 DME, make a left turn to track the 250 radial inbound
  4. Once tracking inbound, descend via the approach using the Advisory altitude table

Approach via the Arc

Using the NZCH ILS/DME 02 as the example, located here: http://www.aip.net.nz/pdf/NZCH_41.1_41.2.pdf

Arcs are normally joined from outside, but can be joined from inside as with this example

  1. Track to the CH VOR via your routing
  2. Upon reaching the CH VOR, track outbound on the 295 radial
  3. Just prior to reaching 13 CH DME, turn left to join the arc
  4. Fly along the Arc by maintaining a 13 DME distance from the CH DME, continuing the now shallow left hand turn as required
  5. Join the localizer for 02 when reaching that radial
